A pilot project on the 18th century convinced the founders that an annual heritage celebration would be attractive and worthwhile.
A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled SHC to form a small administrative base, from which to mount three celebratory Weekends in July of 2005, 2006 and 2007.
2005 Celebrations
The Tudor Weekend of 2005 saw thousands thronging the streets and Square for the Procession of Queen Elizabeth the First and the subsequent Tudor entertainment. Tours, lectures (one by David Starkey), dancing, theatre, childrens’ activities and a packed Tallis Anniversary concert in the Abbey all contributed to a resoundingly successful celebration.
2006 Celebrations
The Medieval Weekend ran from July 7th to 9th, 2006 with a range of events throughout the town. Click here for photos.
2007 Celebrations
In the first week of July 2007, Shrewsbury was transported to the time of the Civil War, with a large-scale community play and a major muster by the Sealed Knot.
